The latest AI news for October 2026 comes down to five stories. Google launched Gemini 4 Argon and a locked-down Gemini 4 Carbon, Meta released Muse Wonder, OpenAI claimed AI-made maths breakthroughs, Anthropic shipped Claude Haiku 5.5 and filed to go public, and coding agents now start over 40% of GitHub pull requests.
Updated 29 October 2026. This roundup covers 22 September to 29 October 2026, and every claim links to the company announcement or news report it comes from. We refresh it every month.
I run TechTipsTool, an agency that builds websites and AI search programmes for clients in India, the US and the Gulf. So I read AI news with one question in mind: what should a business owner actually change this month? The honest answer is "less than the headlines suggest". Two things do matter, though. Agents are moving from demos into daily work, and the most capable models are now released to vetted users first.

Which new AI models launched in October 2026?
Four labs shipped new frontier models in five weeks. Here is what each one is for, and who can actually use it.
Google Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 4 Carbon
Gemini 4 Argon is Google's new general frontier model. It is available in the Gemini app and for developers. Two weeks later, on 28 October, Google introduced Gemini 4 Carbon, which it calls "our strongest model with state-of-the-art cybersecurity and long horizon capabilities".
Gemini 4 Carbon scored 59 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5, the top score, according to Google's 28 October 2026 announcement. Google also reports 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for finding vulnerabilities. You cannot use it yet unless you are a vetted cyber defender in Google's Fairwind Program. The introductory API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, rising to $4 and $20 later.
Anthropic Claude Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5
Anthropic refreshed its whole model line in about two weeks, according to its newsroom:
- Claude Opus 5.5 (22 September) is the model Anthropic says leads in agentic coding and knowledge work, and it costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads.
- Claude Sonnet 5.5 (28 September) runs over 30% faster and costs up to 30% less than Sonnet 5 for most work.
- Claude Haiku 5.5 (7 October) is the small, fast model, aimed at high-volume jobs such as summarisation, subagents and browser use.
On 22 October Anthropic also donated its Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation. More than 70 agent platforms have adopted it. That is quietly the most useful item this month for anyone building workflows, because a skill written once now works across many tools.
OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol and Dots
At DevDay on 29 September, OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI says it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra for agentic coding, computer use and professional work, at one-fifth of the standard token price. The same week, OpenAI cancelled the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, saying it did not meet the company's safety bar.
OpenAI also launched Dots, its always-on personal agents. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser and can connect to more than 4,000 apps. It is rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users first.
Meta Muse Wonder
On 12 October Meta unveiled Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, which it says perform on par with ChatGPT and Claude, citing benchmark data from Artificial Analysis. For now only paid subscribers of the Muse app can use them. Meta said in July that its AI spending could reach $145 billion this year, according to the AFP report.
Why are the most powerful AI models now invite-only?
This is the pattern I would watch most closely. The strongest models now reach vetted users first, because they are good enough at hacking that labs treat them as dual-use:
- OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 Astra in phases from early September, starting with its cybersecurity programme. It was OpenAI's first model to reach its "Critical" internal cybersecurity threshold, according to CNBC.
- GPT-6.1 Astra was not released at all.
- Gemini 4 Carbon is limited to the Fairwind Program.
- Anthropic expanded its Cyber Verification Program on 6 October, giving qualifying security professionals more advanced capabilities.
For a business, the practical point is simple. The model you can buy is usually one step behind the lab's best, and that is fine. What I would not do is build a product or a client workflow that depends on access to a gated model. Plan on the generally available tier.
Did AI really solve famous maths problems?
On 27 October OpenAI said its models had proved the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), and given a mathematically rigorous proof in quantum chromodynamics, Al Jazeera reported. Hours later Anthropic published its own ETH refutation on GitHub, according to TechCrunch.
The experts are interested but careful. MIT's Ryan Williams, who is organising the computer science review, said: "We are working to verify and examine their proof and determine if it holds up." He also said some of the proof has "two or three alien-looking parts". None of it has been peer-reviewed yet.
My take: treat this as a strong signal and an unproven result. For business users the reasoning gains show up as better analysis, planning and code, not as maths.
How much code do AI agents write now?
GitHub's Octoverse 2026 report, published on 28 October, has the clearest numbers of the month:
- Agents started more than 40% of pull requests in September 2026, up from 17% in March.
- Agents started 110 million pull requests in September, about six times March's volume.
- 90% of agent-started pull requests were merged within two weeks.
- GitHub now serves more than 225 million developers, and TypeScript has the most contributors of any language.
For website owners this means development is getting faster and cheaper, and review becomes the bottleneck. On our own builds we let agents write first drafts and have a person review every change for security, performance and brand fit. What happened in AI in India this month?
India had a busy month on compute, funding and developers:
- MeitY, through C-DAC, released a Request for Empanelment for up to 10,000 AI compute units (GPUs, TPUs and similar), in clusters of at least 512 at a single Indian data centre, Medianama reported. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the first tender is for 5,000 and promised a consultation paper on AI regulation within a month.
- Money is the catch. As of April 2026, only ₹400 crore of the ₹10,000-plus crore five-year IndiaAI Mission outlay had been released, according to the same report.
- Bengaluru's Simplismart raised a $14 million Series B led by Dallas Venture Capital, with Nvidia taking part, TechCrunch reported. Its software helped InVideo cut GPU serving costs by 56%.
- India now has 32.0 million developers on GitHub, the second most after the US. It added more than 10 million this year.
What should your business do about this month's AI news?
Most of this month's news needs no action from a typical business. A few items are worth an hour of your time:
- Re-test your three most-used AI prompts on one newer, cheaper model (Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6.1 Sol), and compare quality and cost per task.
- Check that AI crawlers can actually read your website with our free AI crawler checker.
- List the tasks an agent could draft and a person must approve: quotes, emails, reports, code changes.
- Review what you have connected to agents and browsers (email, calendars, drive) and switch on read-only modes where they exist.
- Don't plan any client work around a model you cannot access today.
- Check how your business appears in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers. Our guide on getting cited by AI answer engines shows how.
What I would not recommend is switching your whole AI stack every time a model tops a leaderboard. We keep two models in our workflow, one premium and one cheap, and re-evaluate every quarter. The gap between them is closing quickly, and switching costs time.
The bottom line
October 2026 was a month of big claims. Agents are writing a large share of the world's code, the strongest models are released to vetted users first, and prices keep falling. For most businesses the winning move is not chasing models. It is making sure your website, content and data are ready for the AI agents and AI search that your customers now use. A free website audit is a good first step. If you want us to handle it, our SEO, AEO and GEO service starts at ₹80,000 ($1,400) a month, or you can talk to us first.
FAQ
What is the latest AI news today?
As of 29 October 2026, the biggest stories are Google's Gemini 4 Carbon, which is limited to vetted cyber defenders, and OpenAI's claimed maths breakthroughs, which experts are still verifying. GitHub's Octoverse report also showed that agents now start over 40% of pull requests. We update this page every month with sources.
What is the most advanced AI model right now?
On Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index v5, Google's Gemini 4 Carbon ranks first with a score of 59, according to Google's 28 October 2026 announcement, but only vetted cyber defenders can use it. Among models most businesses can use today, Gemini 4 Argon, OpenAI's GPT-6 family and Claude Opus 5.5 are the main options. The best choice depends on the task, so test with your own work.
Is Gemini 4 Carbon available to the public?
Not yet. Google is releasing it first to a subset of cyber defenders and trusted partners through its Fairwind Program, and says it will reach developers, businesses and consumers "as soon as possible", without giving a date.
Did AI really disprove the Exponential Time Hypothesis?
OpenAI and Anthropic both published claimed refutations in late October 2026, but independent researchers are still checking them and nothing has been peer-reviewed. Until that review finishes, treat it as an important but unconfirmed result.
What is OpenAI Dots?
Dots are always-on personal AI agents that OpenAI launched at DevDay on 29 September 2026. Each one runs on its own cloud computer and browser, connects to more than 4,000 apps, and is rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users first.
Which AI news matters most for small businesses?
Cheaper models and agents matter most. Both make it affordable to automate drafting, research and customer replies. The other priority is visibility, since more customers now ask AI assistants for recommendations, so your website needs to be readable by AI crawlers and clear about what you offer.
